Obsidian Obsession

I am in love with my obsidian purchases from Quartzsite. I had a small obsidian sphere and a tiny pyramid as part of my personal collection, but since coming to the Rockhound’s Mecca and seeing each vendor typically specialize in one or two types of stones you can see a variety and range of quality of a certain gem that draws you. Obsidian typically comes from Mexico and I found the most amazing vendor from Jalisco who had an array of obsidian pieces. He had pyramids, palm stones, obelisks, heart stones, spheres, massage wands, and lastly the most prized and magical piece, an obsidian mirror.

My aunt had introduced me to obsidian mirrors when we ventured to a crystal shop by my old apartment in Silverlake (Los Angeles). There, my aunt knew one of the owners and as I recall I think he had a 7-8 inch oblong obsidian mirror displayed on his counter that he used for customers to sign their receipts. I had purchased some items and my aunt was admiring the obsidian mirror. She picked it up and was staring at her reflection intently. She ordered me to gaze deeply into the blackness to see myself and feel the intensity and energy from the stone. It was a rather magnificent piece–so smooth, cool to the touch, and enchanting. I felt like Narcissus gazing at myself endless and loving the blurry, reflective image. My aunt already had an obsidian mirror and asked if this one was for sale. I can’t remember the price but I believe it was $120, which seemed like a lot to me since I had no idea the cost and value of certain gems. After she purchased it, I kept thinking about the mirror over the next several months that I too wanted to find MY obsidian mirror. Like with most of my purchases, I searched endlessly on the internet for a good deal and couldn’t seem to find a comparable size for a decent price…until I met this vendor from Jalisco. My subconscious dreams came true!  While I didn’t specifically go to Quartzsite looking for a mirror, the thought of wanting the mirror returned to me when a woman asked me what I was looking for. I honestly didn’t know what I was looking for or why I came there, but I would simply know when I saw. I asked around and eventually voices lead me to the right table.

I found several different tables of obsidian objects at the show and did not find any mirrors.  There were a few other “obsidian guys” and none had any mirrors, thus I was reluctant when approaching. When I asked a woman who was partially psychic and sold me a beautiful ametrine sphere whether anyone sold any obsidian mirrors, she quickly scoffed saying: “Oh no, those are too magical.” Despite this discouragement, I still found what my heart desired. When I approached the last obsidian vendor, he was still unpacking his items and I asked him for “obsidian espejos.” With the loving care of a father to his child, he pulled out a collection of round, rather than oblong, mirrors ranging from 3 inches to 8 inches. Absolutely gorgeous! Running low on cash, I only had enough for the 7 inch mirror. Feeling elated with my purchase, I began to ponder it once I returned to the hotel. After talking on the phone with my friend, I got so energized about the obsidian that I said something is telling me to go back and buy the 8 inch mirror. The prices were just too good not too. I drove the 20 miles trying to race and beat the one hour time difference between California and Arizona before the show ended at 5pm. I arrived at 5:22 pm C.S.T. just as he was closing his shop. With desperation I pleaded to purchase the 8 inch mirror and a large pyramid and he happily sold me the items that beckoned me back. And glad I had a moment of blissful insanity to take this plunge into obsidian darkness! Hail obsidian!

Metaphysical and Healing Properties: Obsidian is used for protection as are most black stones. The black colors absorbs the negative energy and deflects it from the owner. Obsidian is also used to protect the soft-hearted and the sensitive, particularly from depression. Scrying is an important and historic ritual one can perform with any reflective surface, and obsidian mirrors are especially good for gazing into one’s mind eye to learn answers to a specific question or about their past, present, or future. Strengthening your psychic abilities by scrying with the obsidian mirror can help you to see things in the mirror that might not otherwise be since in the physical world. The black mirror also acts as a safe gateway into other realms  and helps the traveler get in touch with spirit guides.
